There’s pneumonia in the air… not really but kinda?

Have you noticed there’s been an uptick in pneumonia cases in the United States this fall? Pneumonia is a respiratory infection caused by either a fungus, bacteria, or virus. This year it’s been caused by the bacteria, Mycoplasma pneumoniae. This infection has been particularly affecting young children. This has been especially concerning for our littles with asthma.

What should you look out for?

If your little has a cold that seems to be progressing, look out for the following symptoms…. Fever, diarrhea, headache, wheezing, vomiting, cough, runny nose, to name a few.

How is it spread?

Remember my title? You guessed it, it really is in the air! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, it’s spread by inhaling the respiratory droplets of an infected person after they coughed or sneezed.

How is it diagnosed?

Health care providers often swab the throat or nose and a chest X-ray. So I urge you, if you see these symptoms in your littles and the continue to persist with no improvement, please see a medical professional so the proper medication can be prescribed.

I’m hoping that you all stay safe during this flu, pneumonia, and cold season. Wash your hands and if you’re feeling sick, please stay home to protect our most susceptible population – our littles. Anywho, stepping off my soap box to celebrate the new year! Wish you the best!
